![]() she has this illness, and she finds she can't ignore it any longer. ![]() She doesn't paint herself as a victim either, which was my main problem with Prozac Nation. ![]() that you could recover from the depths and haul yourself out. because i want a professional career, i want to be well respected in my field - and jamieson proved that it was possible. i'll admit, i was in the depths of a serious depressive episode, so perhaps it meant more to me then, but the book gave me hope. (hence i remember the date i read it so well.) it was recommended by a psychiatrist i really respect, and. Those things aside, this book came to me at a very important time in my life. she really kind of put herself on the line for this, and i have to respect that. it does a lot to irradicate the stigma against mental illness, and no doubt she met people in academia who had read her book but never met her, and formed opinions that might be less than true. I also want to say how brave it was for her to write this under her own name. it's more of a - look, she was wildly successful, and dealing with this illness, and she finally came to terms with it, and now she's okay - and still wildly successful. ![]() I just want to say, that for a person suffering from mental illness, the fact that you know jamieson's full CV and her academic struggles is important. I was reading some reviews of the book written by people that disliked this. ![]()

Six-gun in cheek by Bill Pronzini5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Pronzini offers it all up in appropriate batches and breaks it down by ‘type’ for the different chapters. The book is full of examples with passages and paragraphs and even pages of ‘offending’ literature on display. But ‘Jackson Cole’ was a company pseudonym used by a variety of authors – most of whom are known, though the specific titles written by the individuals aren’t as clear. For instance, Pronzini uses the Black Gold by Jackson Cole as one of the baddest of bad westerns in a range full of bad westerns. On occasion Pronzini can only speculate on the author. ![]() He identifies them by name (when known) and offers up samples of their work. Pronzini points out that in some cases there were a few particular authors who tended to more of the purple than others. In this reprint, Six-Gun In Cheek, author Bill Pronzini takes a look at some of the western fiction that has given the genre this reputation.Īlthough Pronzini doesn’t come right out and say why there are so many hackneyed western stories with such flowery descriptions, we do get a sense that the volume of stories needed to fill so many pages of pulp magazines meant that the editors of the rags … er, mags … overlooked some of the faults in order to meet deadlines and demand. If you mention ‘western fiction’ or simply ‘western’ to most people – even generally well-read people – they will likely have one of two first thoughts: it’s the world of Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey and/or it’s the world of cheesy gun-fights and prose so purple you’ll wonder if Crayola has a crayon named for it. ![]()

Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook5/28/2023 ![]() The art and dialogue complement each other as they express the tension that Kim and her friends felt as they tried to balance school, family, and romance with surviving in a dangerous political environment. The disturbing elements of political corruption and loss of human rights are lightened by moving depictions of sweet, funny moments between friends as well as deft political maneuvering by Kim herself when she was eventually questioned by authorities. The kinetic manhwa drawing style skillfully captures the personal and political history of this eye-opening memoir. As she learned the truth of her country’s oppressive fascist political environment, Kim became closer to the other book club members while the authorities grew increasingly desperate to identify and punish student dissidents. Kim was fearful at first, but her thirst for knowledge soon won out. Following an administrator’s advice to avoid trouble and pursue extracurriculars, she joined a folk dance team where she met a fellow student who invited her into a banned book club. ![]() The daughter of modest restaurant owners, Kim was apolitical-she just wanted to make her parents proud and be worthy of her tuition expenses. ![]() ![]() In 1983 South Korea, Kim was learning to navigate university and student political activism. ![]() |
